The municipality of Orio lies in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country: according to official INE figures for 1 January 2025 it is home to 6,184 people, over about 9.5 km².
Density, at about 651 inhabitants per km², is that of a populous urban area, with residential districts, services and businesses. Of the 34 municipalities in the province of Gipuzkoa with at least 5,000 inhabitants, it is number 30 by population.
As the crow flies it lies about 10 km west of San Sebastián, the provincial capital. The nearest major city is Bilbao, about 65 km away.
