Cover letter in Spanish

A good carta de presentación explains in a few lines why you are the right person: here is how to write it, with a complete example.

The carta de presentación accompanies your CV and explains why you are applying, what you can offer the company and why you want to work there. It must be short, personalised and written in correct Spanish. Today it is almost always sent as the body of an email or as a PDF attachment.

Two kinds of letter

  • Respuesta a una oferta: replying to a specific ad; mention the position, reference and where you found it, and address the stated requirements.
  • Candidatura espontánea: sent to a company that has not advertised; it must show that you know the company and explain where you could be useful.

Structure

  1. Heading: your details, the date, the name of the person or department you are writing to.
  2. Greeting: if you know the name, Estimada Sra. García: or Estimado Sr. López:; otherwise Estimados señores: or A la atención del Departamento de Recursos Humanos:. Note that Spanish uses a colon after the greeting.
  3. First paragraph: the reason for writing and the position.
  4. Second paragraph: your most relevant skills and experience, with concrete examples.
  5. Third paragraph: why this company, and what you can contribute.
  6. Closing: availability for an interview and thanks.
  7. Sign-off and signature: Atentamente, or Un cordial saludo,.

Example

Estimada Sra. Mistakes to avoid

Don't exceed one page; don't repeat your CV word for word; don't send the same generic letter to everyone; avoid an over-familiar tone; double-check the company's and the person's names. See also working in Spain and the phrasebook.
