Formentera's fiestas follow the religious calendar of the village patron saints. They are a chance to see ball pagès, the traditional dance of the Pityusic Islands, with costumes and music of flute, drum and castanets.
The calendar
- Sant Ferran, around 30 May, in Sant Ferran de ses Roques.
- Sant Joan, the night of 23 June, with bonfires.
- Mare de Déu del Carme, on 16 July, patron of sailors: in La Savina and Es Pujols the statue of the Virgin is carried in a procession at sea by fishing boats decked out for the occasion.
- Sant Jaume, on 25 July, Formentera's patron saint and the island's biggest fiesta: in Sant Francesc there is a solemn mass, procession, ball pagès, concerts, a craft fair and fireworks.
- Sant Agustí, in late August, at Es Caló.
- El Pilar de la Mola, on 12 October, on the plateau.
- Sant Francesc Xavier, on 3 December, the capital's fiesta.
Other events
- Easter, with processions and flaó.
- The craft markets of La Mola, Sant Francesc and Es Pujols, throughout the summer.
- Concerts, open-air cinema and sports events in summer, such as cycling and running races.
Tips
During Sant Jaume the island fills up: book accommodation in advance. Festival programmes are on the Consell de Formentera website and at the tourist office. See also traditions and crafts and Ibiza's festivals.
