Nature and hiking in Formentera

Lagoons, salt pans, juniper woods, cliffs and one of the clearest seas in Europe: Formentera is best discovered slowly, on foot or by bike.

Formentera's landscape is flat, with two plateaus at either end, La Mola in the east and Cap de Barbaria in the south, joined by a sandy isthmus. Much of the island is protected.

Ses Salines natural park

Ses Salines d'Eivissa i Formentera natural park, created in 2001, covers the north of the island, the strait towards Ibiza and the islets. Its salt pans, lagoons, dunes and juniper woods host flamingos, herons, black-winged stilts and many migratory birds. The park also includes the Posidonia meadows, a UNESCO site since 1999 and among the largest and oldest living organisms on the planet.

The lagoons

Estany Pudent, the large salt lagoon near La Savina, is ideal for birdwatching, with a cycling and walking route all around it. The smaller Estany des Peix opens to the sea and is used as a shelter by boats.

On foot and by bike

Formentera has over thirty camins verds, waymarked routes on country roads and paths, suitable for everyone. Among the best:

  • the Camí de s'Estany, around Estany Pudent;
  • the Camí Romà, the old paved mule track climbing from Es Caló to the La Mola plateau, with superb views;
  • the routes towards Cap de Barbaria, between dry-stone walls and fields;
  • the path along the cliffs of La Mola.

Bikes, including e-bikes, are ideal and easy to hire in La Savina and Es Pujols.

In the sea

  • Snorkelling in rocky coves such as Es Caló and Caló des Mort.
  • Diving, with centres in La Savina and Es Pujols, among Posidonia meadows, caves and shoals.
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding along the coast and to the islet of Espalmador.
  • Sailing and kitesurfing, especially at Llevant and Migjorn when the wind blows.

Tips

Spring and autumn are perfect for walking and cycling. Stay on marked paths to protect the dunes. See also the beaches.
