Girona's old town, the Barri Vell, is easily seen on foot in a day. Here is an itinerary covering all the main sights.
Morning
- The Onyar bridges: start from the Pont de Sant Agustí or the Pont de les Peixateries Velles, the red iron bridge, for the classic photo of colourful houses reflected in the river.
- Rambla de la Llibertat and Plaça de la Independència, with arcades and cafés.
- The Call: get lost in the stone lanes of the Jewish quarter, such as Carrer de la Força and its covered passages, and visit the Museum of the History of the Jews.
- The cathedral: climb the great stairway of 90 steps, see the Gothic nave, the Romanesque cloister and the Treasury Museum, with the Tapestry of Creation and the Girona Beatus, a tenth-century illuminated manuscript.
Afternoon
- The basilica of Sant Feliu, with its unfinished spire and early Christian sarcophagi, and the lioness on the column in front of the church.
- The Arab baths, in fact Romanesque, with a central hall ringed by columns.
- Sant Pere de Galligants, a Romanesque monastery with a cloister and the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia, and the little church of Sant Nicolau nearby.
- The wall walk (Passeig Arqueològic and Passeig de la Muralla): climb up near Sant Pere or the Alemanys gardens and follow the walls to the Torre Gironella and beyond, with views of the cathedral and the Pyrenees, especially at sunset.
Game of Thrones locations
In season six of the series, Girona became Braavos and part of King's Landing: the cathedral stairway, the lanes of the Call, the Arab baths and Sant Pere monastery are among the recognisable places. Themed guided tours are available.
Tips
- The walls involve many steps: wear comfortable shoes.
- In spring, during Temps de Flors, monuments are decorated with flowers but the city is very crowded (see festivals).
- A combined museum ticket, Girona Museus, is available. See Girona's museums.
- For lunch and dinner see eating in Girona.
