Girona's museums

A small city with high-quality museums: from medieval Jewish culture to the history of cinema, from Romanesque art to the Tapestry of Creation.

Girona has an interesting, varied museum network, almost all in the old town, easily visited in a day or two.

The main museums

  • Museum of the History of the Jews (Museu d'Història dels Jueus): in the heart of the Call, where the last synagogue stood, it tells the story of Girona's medieval Jewish community, one of Catalonia's most important, with tombstones, documents and the figures of the Kabbalists, such as Nahmanides (Bonastruc ça Porta).
  • Cathedral treasury and museum: home to the Tapestry of Creation, a Romanesque embroidery from the eleventh or twelfth century depicting the creation of the world with Christ at the centre, one of the great textile masterpieces of the Middle Ages, and the Girona Beatus, an illuminated manuscript of 975.
  • Art Museum (Museu d'Art): in the Episcopal Palace next to the cathedral, with art from Romanesque to the twentieth century, Gothic altar panels and works by nineteenth-century Catalan painters.
  • Cinema Museum: based on the Tomàs Mallol collection, it traces the history of moving images, from shadow puppets and magic lanterns to the Lumière brothers' first films: one of Spain's most original museums, great for families.
  • Archaeology Museum of Catalonia: in the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, with finds from prehistory to the Middle Ages and from the Greek and Roman colonies of Empúries (see Empúries).
  • Girona History Museum: in a former Capuchin convent, with the friars' cemetery, telling the city's story from the Romans to the sieges and industry.
