The municipality of Sopela lies in the province of Biscay, in the Basque Country: according to official INE figures for 1 January 2025 it is home to 15,048 people, over about 8.0 km².
With about 1,881 inhabitants per km², it is one of the most densely populated areas in the country, part of a large metropolitan area. Of the 35 municipalities in the province of Biscay with at least 5,000 inhabitants, it is number 17 by population.
As the crow flies it lies about 14 km north of Bilbao, the provincial capital.
