Paterna, in the Valencian Community, is part of the province of Valencia. The municipality covers about 38.8 km² and had 76,019 inhabitants on 1 January 2025.
With about 1,959 inhabitants per km², it is one of the most densely populated areas in the country, part of a large metropolitan area. Of the 80 municipalities in the province of Valencia with at least 5,000 inhabitants, it is number 4 by population.
As the crow flies it lies about 15 km north-west of Valencia, the provincial capital.
