In the 1960s Ibiza was one of the great destinations for hippies from around the world, drawn by nature, freedom and low prices (see history). To make a living, many sold their crafts: so began the markets that remain an attraction today.
Punta Arabí
The Punta Arabí hippy market at Es Canar, in Santa Eulària, is the island's oldest and largest: founded in 1973, it is held every Wednesday from April to October, morning to afternoon. Hundreds of stalls sell clothes, jewellery, leather bags, sandals, ceramics, decorative objects and souvenirs, with live music, bars and shows. Reach it by car, bus or boat from Santa Eulària.
Las Dalias
Las Dalias market at Sant Carles de Peralta began in 1985 in the garden of an old bar and is the residents' favourite. It is held every Saturday all year, and in summer with evening Night Markets, with music and a magical atmosphere. Here you find quality crafts, boho fashion, goods from India and Morocco, natural cosmetics and food. Las Dalias also hosts concerts and parties.
Other markets
- The Ibiza port market in the Marina, every summer evening, with hippy stalls and adlib fashion.
- Sant Joan market on Sundays, with organic produce, crafts and music.
- The Forada farmers' market on Saturday mornings, with fruit, vegetables and local products.
- The Sant Jordi market on Saturdays at the racetrack, more of a flea market.
- On Formentera, the La Mola craft market on Wednesdays and Sundays in summer.
What to buy
White cotton clothes inspired by adlib fashion, silver jewellery, leather bags and sandals, straw hats, ceramics, dreamcatchers, natural soaps and oils, and island products such as hierbas ibicencas. Prices vary: polite haggling is fine. See also shopping in Spain.
