Erasmus in Barcelona

Sea, culture, parties and world-class universities: Barcelona is one of Europe's most sought-after Erasmus destinations, but it needs careful preparation.

Barcelona is one of Europe's most popular Erasmus destinations. For a general introduction to the programme see Erasmus in Spain.

Universities

  • University of Barcelona (UB): the oldest and largest, with its historic building on Plaça Universitat and faculties all over the city.
  • Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB): campus at Bellaterra, outside the city, reached by train.
  • Pompeu Fabra University (UPF): young and prestigious, strong in economics, political science, communication and law, with campuses in the centre and Poblenou.
  • Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC): engineering and architecture.
  • Others: Ramon Llull University, ESADE, IQS, the Open University of Catalonia, and art and design schools such as Elisava and EINA.

Language

In Catalonia many classes are taught in Catalan, although teachers often accept exams in Castilian and some courses are in English. Check the teaching language before completing your Learning Agreement. Universities offer free or cheap Catalan and Spanish courses for international students: learning some Catalan helps you fit in (see Spain's languages).

Housing

Finding a home is the main challenge: rents are among the highest in Spain. A room in a shared flat costs roughly 500-750 euros a month, more in central areas. Start looking months ahead on sites such as Idealista, Badi, Uniplaces and Spotahome or in halls of residence, and beware of ads asking for payment before you see the room or sign a contract. Student favourites include Gràcia, Sant Antoni, Poble Sec, the Eixample and, for UPF students, Poblenou.

Costs and transport

Budget at least 1,000-1,300 euros a month, including housing (see the cost of living). For transport, the T-Jove pass gives unlimited travel for three months at a reduced price for under-30s; residents can use the Bicing bike service.

Student life

ESN organises welcome events, language exchanges, trips and parties. You can go to the beach until October, take trips to Montserrat, Sitges, Girona, the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees, go to concerts and festivals such as Primavera Sound, and enjoy neighbourhood festivals (see Barcelona festivals and events). Watch out for pickpockets on the metro and in nightlife areas, and always carry a copy of your ID. See also our Barcelona guide and lifestyle.
