Can Picafort

A quiet resort on Alcúdia bay, with sandy beaches, a protected natural estate and a 2,500-year-old seaside necropolis.

Can Picafort is the seaside resort of Santa Margalida municipality, on the north coast of Majorca, in the middle of the great bay of Alcúdia. Born as a fishing village and summer-house colony, it grew with tourism from the 1960s and is now a quiet destination loved by families.

Beaches

Can Picafort beach is part of the long arc of sand from Port d'Alcúdia eastwards. It has fine sand and shallow water, with facilities and a pedestrian promenade full of bars and restaurants. To the east are more natural beaches, such as Son Bauló, with dunes, and the rocky coves of the Son Real estate (see beaches).

Son Real and the necropolis

The public Son Real estate, a former farm now protected, has coastal paths, a museum house on rural life and, right on the rocks by the sea, the Son Real necropolis, an Iron Age cemetery with over a hundred tombs shaped like small ships and towers, used between the seventh and first centuries BC. Opposite lies the Illot dels Porros, the "island of the dead", with another necropolis. There is also the Son Bauló necropolis within the town.

Santa Margalida

The village of Santa Margalida, inland, clusters around a Gothic church on a hill. Every September it celebrates the Beata festival, in honour of St Catalina Thomàs, with a parade of floats and horses. The municipality has about 14,000 inhabitants.

Nearby

Can Picafort is close to S'Albufera natural park and Alcúdia, and a good base for the north of the island, Pollença and Formentor (see Majorca's nature).
