Andratx

A stone village among the mountains, one of the Balearics' most elegant harbours and the dragon island: Andratx is the western gateway to the Serra de Tramuntana.

Andratx is a municipality of about 12,000 people at the south-western tip of Majorca, where the Serra de Tramuntana begins. It includes the historic inland village and some of the island's most exclusive coastal spots.

The village

Andratx village lies a few kilometres from the coast, safe from pirates, dominated by the eighteenth-century fortified church of Santa Maria and Son Mas castle, now the town hall. It keeps quiet lanes and stone houses. A market is held every Wednesday. Nearby, CCA Andratx is a contemporary art centre with international exhibitions.

Port d'Andratx

Port d'Andratx is one of the most beautiful and elegant marinas in the Balearics, in a deep bay ringed by villa-dotted hills. It draws yachts, VIPs and families, with seafront fish restaurants, bars and boutiques. Its sunsets are famous (see entertainment).

Sant Elm and Sa Dragonera

The village of Sant Elm has a small beach and is the departure point for boats to Sa Dragonera, a long, narrow island shaped like a sleeping dragon, a natural park with trails, lighthouses and large colonies of lizards and seabirds. From Sant Elm a path also leads to the former Trappist monastery of Sa Trapa.

Beaches and hikes

The main beaches are Camp de Mar, with a restaurant on an islet reached by a footbridge, Cala Llamp and Sant Elm. Andratx is the start of the GR 221, the dry-stone route crossing the Tramuntana to Pollença (see Majorca's nature). The coast road towards Estellencs and Banyalbufar is one of the island's most scenic. Palma is about 30 km away (see Palma).
